According to a new rumour, Sony could be working on technology that will allow some PS3 games to run natively on a PS5 without the need to stream them.
As reported by PlayStation Lifestyle, XboxEra’s Nick ‘Spheshal_Nick’ Baker claims Sony is working on something that will enable select PS3 games to be playable on the PS5 without the need for streaming that’s required now.
The part where Baker talks about this rumour is at 02:58:03 in the vdieo below, and it should be noted the segment is titled The Rumourmill, so take this news with a heavy pinch of salt.
Baker says, “What I’ve heard is that Sony is working on select PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility.” Further going into what “select” means, he explains some PS3 games will become available for sale to be bought and played on PS5. He says he has no more details than that.
The XboxEra team theorise that the select games could be just some popular first-party games, and Baker said he hopes the rumour is true because he doesn’t want to keep his PS3 around anymore. It’s possible to play PS1 games on the PS2, and PS4 games on the PS5, but the PS3 is stuck by itself. It’s long been an issue for fans who were hoping to play their older titles on the PS3 or their PS3 games on newer consoles.
Currently, the only way to do so is via PS Plus and it’s classics offerings, which allow players to stream some PS3 games over the internet. It mostly works, but means if you have a spotty connection, your games could lag a lot.
