WhatsApp is always working on delivering new features for its users, and that’s thanks to the beta program that it has. There’s a new feature coming that will bring it closer to its Meta sibling Instagram. WhatsApp is working on bringing usernames.

Since we’re talking about a feature in beta testing, you’ll want to take this info with a grain of salt. We’re not 100% certain that WhatsApp is going to bring this feature to the app. We’ll need to wait to see if the company will bring it to the stable version.

WhatsApp might bring usernames

On WhatsApp, people identify you by your legal name. That makes sense if you are using the app for business. However, there are people out there who use it for recreational purposes. Because of this, the company might give users another way to identify each other.

In the beta version of WhatsApp on the Play Store (version 2.23.11.15) WABInfo was able to find a feature that would enable usernames. In a screenshot, we see a new option under the Profile settings. When you tap on it, you’ll be able to set your unique username. They weren’t able to assign a username, however.

Being able to use usernames in WhatsApp might be a better way to use the app. For starters, each username is unique. This means that you won’t have to weed through people with identical names just to find one person.

Also, this helps maintain anonymity. If you’re on the platform, but you don’t want to give other people your legal name, then you can make a username for the platform. This is a feature that will make it just a bit more fun. It’s easy to see WhatsApp as a business-only platform.

We don’t know when or if WhatsApp plans on making this feature official. It’s in testing now, so there’s a chance that people will see usernames pop up as testers communicate with other users. Only time will tell.
