The experimental duo covered the 2003 track for the “Song That Found Me at the Right Time” series

The wonderfully weird indie duo Water From Your Eyes paid tribute to one of their many wonderfully weird predecessors, Ween, with a new cover of “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All).”

The original tune appeared on Ween’s 2003 album, Quebec, a big, winding ballad flush with orchestral strings and end-of-relationship agony. Water From Your Eyes deliver a fully unplugged take on the tune that’s no less affecting when stripped down to Nate Amos’ acoustic guitar and Rachel Brown’s vocals.

Water From Your Eyes covered “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All)” for the “Song That Found Me at the Right Time” series from Sounds of Saving and the 988 Crisis and Suicide Lifeline. Prior to the performance, the experimental duo opened up about their struggles with mental health over the years and how both music and therapy have been important tools.

“When I make music it’s nice, because it feels cathartic when I make,” Brown said. “And then when I listen to it with enough distance in between when I made it, in that moment, then I can realize, to some degree, what I was feeling.”

Amos added: “We’re both kind of compulsive creators, I don’t think either of us have much of a choice. I just feel bad if I don’t do it.”

Water From Your Eyes released the excellent album Everyone’s Crushed last year, and it ultimately landed at Number 36 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Best Albums of 2023. The duo has always had a particular penchant for covers, too, both sincere and clever: Back in 2021, they released Somebody Else’s Songs, which featured covers of everyone from No Doubt and Carly Rae Jepson to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Eminem. (The title was also a play on the duo’s own 2019 album, Somebody Else’s Song.)
