On August 25, the US embassy in Israel issued a new security alert for the territories of Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza due to the latest military actions between Israel and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah.

At approximately 1:30 GMT on Sunday, Israel launched a pre-emptive strike across southern Lebanon, allegedly to thwart a large-scale rocket and drone attack planned by Hezbollah, according to IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.

Locations affected included the Bir Kalb area, Beaufort Castle, and the outskirts of the towns of Louaizeh, Bsalia, Kfar Melki, Ain Qana, Kfar Fila, Sajd and Sarba, according to the BBC.

Faced with the imminent possibility of retaliation by the terrorist group, the US Embassy issued a series of recommendations to help Americans traveling or staying in Israel do so as safely as possible.

Given that the US State Department advises “Reconsider Travel” to Israel and the West Bank, and “Do Not Travel” to Gaza, it’s of paramount importance for those in any of these territories to know—in advance—where the nearest bomb shelter is located. Searching for it the moment the siren is activated might be too late.

U.S. Government Issues Updated Travel Advisory For Israel Amid Attack Threat

“In the event of mortar or rocket fire or hostile aircraft intrusion, a “red alert” siren may be activated. Treat all such alerts as real; follow the instructions from local authorities and seek shelter immediately. Know the location of your closest shelter or protected space,” reads the advisory.

By all means, refrain from traveling to Gaza and to “northern Israel within 2.5 miles of the Lebanese and Syrian borders,” as that is where most attacks occur.

Keep in mind that in emergencies such as massive rocket and drone attacks, U.S. Embassy personnel are prohibited from traveling to certain areas of Israel, including the Old City of Jerusalem and the West Bank.

This means that if you get in trouble in any of these areas, you cannot rely on US assistance. In fact, the US advises Americans to develop their own security plans, as it will have little to no consular capacity to assist those who travel to these areas against the government’s advice.

Other essential precautions travelers and residents must take to stay safe, include avoiding all demonstrations and large gatherings.

Immediately leave any area with a heavy police presence, keep yourself informed about the latest news on the ground, and follow the instructions of local authorities without delay.

“For additional information on appropriate action to take upon hearing a siren or explosion, see the Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command website (available on devices within Israel) or view the Preparedness Information PDF. U.S. citizens may also wish to download the free Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command application on Android or Apple devices to receive real-time security and safety alerts,” reads the advisory.

Last but not least, consider registering in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to help the US government locate you in case of need.
