The U.S. Embassy & Consulate has issued an urgent warning regarding escalating violence in Tamaulipas, specifically around the areas of Reynosa, Rio Bravo, Valle Hermoso, and San Fernando.
According to the consulate, there has been an increase in gun battles during the late night and early morning hours in Reynosa, as well as a growing threat from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the region.

IED Threat and Recent Incidents
The state of Tamaulipas has reported the discovery of IEDs along dirt and secondary roads in Reynosa, Rio Bravo, Valle Hermoso, and San Fernando. These devices are being manufactured and deployed by criminal organizations, posing significant risks to travelers and residents in the region.
On January 23, an IED destroyed a vehicle belonging to a Government of Mexico (Conagua) official in Rio Bravo, injuring the occupant. This incident highlights the severity of the threat and the increasing danger posed by these devices. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid handling or approaching unknown objects near roads.
U.S. Government Measures and Travel Restrictions
As a precautionary measure, U.S. government employees have been ordered to avoid all travel in and around Reynosa and Rio Bravo outside daylight hours. Additionally, they are instructed to avoid dirt roads throughout Tamaulipas. These restrictions align with the State Department’s Travel Advisory for Tamaulipas, which is designated as “Level 4: Do Not Travel” due to pervasive crime and kidnapping risks.
