A revised Level 2 travel advisory for South Africa was released by the U.S. State Department, which advises travelers to proceed with extra caution because of the country’s high crime and civil unrest.

Armed robberies, rapes, carjackings, muggings, and “smash-and-grab” attacks on cars are examples of violent crime that occurs frequently. Major cities’ central business districts are more likely to experience violent crime after dark, according to authorities.

Additionally, the department issued a warning about using GPS in South Africa. According to the update, there have been instances where visitors to Cape Town using GPS navigation apps have been directed through residential areas with high rates of violent crime.

Strikes, protests, and demonstrations happen regularly and can happen suddenly, causing disruptions to other services like transportation and traffic.

Additionally, unless they are accompanied by someone who is familiar with the area, visitors should refrain from walking alone, especially after dark, and avoid visiting informal settlement areas.

Additionally, visitors should always have a copy of their U.S. passport and visa, drive with doors locked and windows closed, and refrain from flashing cash or valuables.
