While some destinations have become widely overrated, others don’t get their due, and it seems like travelers in 2024 are planning to change all that.
That’s why The Washington Post recently released a list of the 12 most underrated places across the world where you can take in all the joys of travel without the overinflated prices and suffocating crowds.
Among some of Italy’s, Japan’s, and Mexico’s most gorgeous destinations, there was one North American city that stood out thanks to its natural allure, understated charm, and fantastic food scene.
Below, you’ll find just a couple of the reasons why Asheville, North Carolina is one of the most underrated travel hubs not only in the U.S. but the entire world.
The Understated Allure Of Asheville
Most of Asheville’s unmistakable charm lies in its unassuming beauty – a place that stuns you with its landscapes and cultural scene without ever coming off as pretentious.
Unlike the bustling metropolises where movement is never-ending and a symphony of traffic and police sirens follow your every move, Asheville gives visitors all of the perks of being in a mid-sized city without any of the chaos.
It, thus, comes as no shock that the North Carolina gem is a haven for artists who feel inspired by the region’s openness and beauty to create some truly breathtaking pieces, so if you’re ever in Asheville, exploring the local galleries and live events, mainly concentrated in the River Arts District, is a must.
The Perfect 4-Season Climate
What makes Asheville the perfect travel destination year-round (besides the thriving arts scene) is the fact that this is one of the only places in the entire U.S. where you can actually experience the perfect 4-season climate.
Right now, temperatures are ranging between 30°F (-1°C) and 59°F (15°C), whereas light layers of snow are common all throughout winter.
Come spring, though, you can expect temperatures to rise into the mid-60s and flowers to bloom, only for summer to come in all humid and hot, perfect for a nighttime barbecue.
Fall completes the annual cycle, transforming the city into the perfect setting for the type of picturesque hikes and scenic drives you’ve only seen in movies.
You’ll Be Surprised With How Much There Is To Explore
When I said that there’s much more to Asheville than its artistic spirit, I meant it.
Don’t let the city’s small size fool you – there’s so much to do and see here that no matter your preferences, your only struggle will be prioritizing the things you want to experience the most.
If you’ve never been to Asheville before, some must-see attractions to add to your itinerary include the iconic Biltmore Estate, the Appalachian Highlands, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Now, since consumer prices in the city are a bit above the national average, those trying to stick to a strict budget might be wary of creating a miles-long list of things to do in Asheville- don’t be.
I’m here to tell you there’s nothing to worry about.
There’s plenty to experience in the city even on a shoestring budget, like exploring the River Arts District, browsing the fresh produce in the Asheville City Market, hiking through the Craggy Pinnacle Trail, or taking some frame-worthy pictures in the Montford Historic District.
The City Of Beer And Great Food
While the allure of the jaw-dropping views and fun events can’t be overestimated, what really sets Asheville apart from other mid-sized cities of its kind is the fascinating food scene.
The North Carolina hub has often been nicknamed “the city of beer” thanks to the fact that here, you’ll find more breweries per capita than in any other place in the country – so beer lovers, this is your chance to shine.
Even if you’re not a beer expert by now, taking the Asheville Ale Trail will help you explore the city’s many, though all equally delicious brews – who knows, you might even find your next favorite drink.
Food lovers, on the other hand, will appreciate the local farm-to-table ethos and the fact that chefs here draw inspiration from the surrounding Appalachian region, creating must-try dishes like fried okra, cast-iron cornbread, and the famous Appalachian trout.
