The Analogue Pocket is getting a glow in the dark model. And just like the initial runs of the retro gaming device, it will be limited edition. But this time it’s a little bit different. Because according to Analogue, it won’t just be limited, it’ll be highly limited. For those who are unfamiliar, the Analogue Pocket is a Game Boy-style handheld that was designed to play actual Game Boy cartridges. It also has optional insert accessories that enable to play Game Boy Color carts. As well as carts from the Sega Game Gear. The Pocket goes even further with a new adapter set for the TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Atari Lynx. If you happen to have carts from any of those laying around but no working console to use them with.
Those who have tried to hunt down one of these elusive devices and failed know what “highly limited” means. That it could be nigh impossible to acquire the new glow in the dark retro handheld. Like those original models, it’ll come with a USB cable for charging. Analogue says the unit will go on sale on September 1 promptly at 8am PDT. So you better be ready to add one to your cart and pre-order it the moment 8am rolls around this Friday morning. The glow in the dark Analogue Pocket retails for $249.99 so it’s a bit more expensive than the black and white models that launched for $219.99.
Then again it is highly limited and a bit of a special case since it has the neat glow feature.
The Analogue Pocket will glow for 8 hours
Speaking of glowing, the glow in the dark model of this device will glow for a total of 8 hours. Pocket used glow in the dark plastic to make the outer shell and you can “charge it up” by using light from an incandescent light bulb. It’ll also charge up via other light sources such as black lights and sunlight. Though we’d probably recommend against using sunlight if you live in intensely hot climates like Pheonix in the Summer. Which has been known to reach temperatures that can melt signs.
According to Pocket, the plastic is a high-quality proprietary luminescent plastic that contains phosphorescent compounds that “absorb and store ambient light.” This is what gives the unit its “virtually radioactive, chalky, starry glow.” We can imagine this is going to be a highly sought after and prized handheld to own. As these types of unique products tend to be. Then of course, there’s the fact that Analogue is setting it up to be highly sought after, and it doesn’t help that the original models are out of stock completely. Which is only going to compound the desire for this model.
