Hiking lovers around the world will be able to get free accommodation in Italy while completing the “Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara,” a 311-mile (500 km) trail on the stunning Mediterranean island of Sardinia.
Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara Foundation (CMSB) is offering hikers under the age of 35, three nights of free accommodation. CMSB’s main goal is to promote other tourist offerings rather than traditional beaches.
The offer will be valid until June 15 and will run again between September 15 and December 31, when the hot summer months are gone.
Why you should go
Having 3 nights of free accommodation may definitely catch your attention but that’s not the only reason why you should explore this trail.
The path is divided into 30 stages (10 miles/16 km each) and takes a month to complete. So you must be mentally prepared for the physical challenge.
According to Sardinia Tourism, the hike “offers spiritual nourishment that few similar places can claim. Step after step, walking over the oldest terrain of Europe, you immerse yourself in the beautiful power of nature.”
Along the path, you’ll be able to visit a collection of old churches, walk over the brilliant sandy dunes of Piscinas, lose yourself in the beautiful Marganai oak forest, go across the old miners’ mule trails and abandoned railway tracks and be impressed by the extraordinary sunsets above the Mediterranean Sea.
How to participate
In order to take part in this adventure, you should register at the CMSB website to get a “walker’s passport.” It has a €5 membership fee.
Participants will receive an email with three token vouchers that should be used when booking accommodations along the hike.
Accommodations
You can choose from 24 accommodations the CMSB is associated with, including some inns, campsites or B&Bs. In all cases, breakfast is included!
Most accommodations cost around 25 euros.
