“What is this, a controller for ants?” you might ask yourself when looking at the 8BitDo Micro. But it’s not a controller for ants. It’s 8BitDo‘s new pocketable Bluetooth gamepad and is the evolution of what was once the 8BitDo Zero and Zero 2.

It’s intentionally small so it has that “go-anywhere, play-anywhere” aura about it. You can stuff it in your pocket, toss it in a purse, or hang it from a belt loop if you want. Yes, it still has the same lanyard loop in the bottom corner so you can attach a keychain if you so desire. The Micro is also compatible with Android, Nintendo Switch, and Raspberry Pi computers. And you can technically use it with devices you can plug a USB-C cable into. Though only in “keyboard mode” which is more limiting.

For its comically small size, the Micro is quite substantially capable of doing everything a standard full-size controller would. Thanks to its 16 buttons which include a d-pad, four action buttons, four triggers, and even the Switch plus and minus buttons. It also comes in two colors, blue and green, and only costs $25.

That being said, you will want to keep in mind that this might not be the best option for larger hands. Especially not for extended gaming sessions. Think about playing games on the Nintendo Switch. Though it’s a wonderful system, the joy-Con controllers don’t offer a lot of extra grip. Making it a tad uncomfortable to hold for more than a few hours unless your hands are pretty small.

It’s hard to believe the Micro will be much different. As there’s just not a lot to grab onto. Still, that’s a small concession you’ll need to make for the tradeoff of having a really portable controller. And this is probably as portable as they come.
