Superman fans have been sharing their “disappointment” at early images of the character’s new suit, as worn by actor David Corenswet.
The film, now simply titled Superman after having initially been named Superman: Legacy, is set to arrive in July 2025 as the launch movie of the latest version of the DC Universe.
Helmed by Guardians Of The Galaxy’s James Gunn – who is now the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran – Superman will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and more.
The first look at Corenswet as Superman came last month when director James Gunn shared a picture on social media of the actor in costume.
In the picture, Corenswet is seen wearing the iconic red and blue Superman suit, albeit with changes to its logo and seemingly the return of the Kryptonian’s iconic red briefs. It also includes an ominous beam firing behind Superman.
Further images have now been shared, and fans on social media have not been slowing in sharing their hesitations about the new design of the iconic Superman suit.
“I love & support David Corenswet’s casting as the Superman but I am super disappointed in the suit,” wrote one X user. “This is such a massive downgrade from Henry Cavill’s Superman. What a missed opportunity. Hoping they fix this in post.”

Another said: “The problem I keep coming back to with the Corenswet suit is how flat it looks despite all the extra lines. Pardon my being That Guy™, but even in the softest light, Cavill’s didn’t have this problem. The silver undersuit worked wonders for giving it dimension.”

See some further reactions below:
Thoughts about the new Superman suit.
The “S” design is bad.
The suit lines are unnecessary, a callback to the ugly “New 52” suit.
It is ill-fitting in places.
I like the trunks and the belt.
David Corenswet looks like an off-brand Henry Cavill.
Overall, it’s a solid C-minus. pic.twitter.com/p13daHU52h— Kennie Bass (@KennieBassWCHS) June 25, 2024
Bro, Cavill suit aside. I can find many COSPLAY suits better Jan this Corenswet suit pic.twitter.com/BcStgOTtuQ

Let’s not kid ourselves.
The idea is there, but the execution, not so much. This looks like something from a low-budget CW show. It’s that bad IMO. A serious downgrade. Here’s a side-by-side comparison between Henry Cavill’s first suit and David Corenswet’s suit. #Superman pic.twitter.com/j17Efu23Xg

let’s compare set pics instead of one from the film itself, since we still haven’t seen Corenswet’s in action.
in my opinion, the only thing that’s better in Cavill’s is the shape of the S 🤷♂️ https://t.co/SpiC4fophE pic.twitter.com/KGB4lrPv0Z

In January last year, Peter Safran revealed more about the plot for Superman, telling reporters: “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned.”
Gunn confirmed in December 2022 that longtime Superman actor Henry Cavill will not be involved in his vision of the DC Universe. Gunn said at the time: “In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
