Android games are will soon get a big boost to performance and visual quality thanks to Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Game Super Resolution technology. Announced on April 26, Snapdragon GSR will have the capability to bump Android games from 1080p to an upscaled 4K resolution for better graphics and more refined details. It’ll also be able to boost games that would typically run at 30 frames per second to 60+ frames per second. Letting the game run at faster frame rates for a smoother, more enjoyable mobile gaming experience.

Qualcomm says the tech is capable of maximizing mobile gaming performance and battery life. Here’s Qualcomm’s official description. “Snapdragon Game Super Resolution is a single pass spatial aware super resolution technique developed by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Studios to achieve optimal super scaling quality at the best performance and power savings”

Basically, it allows the Snapdragon platform to boost graphics and performance. It can also increase battery life. Which means you can play games with higher fidelity and faster fps, or choose to lessen the power consumption of the game. Of course games will need to support this technology first if gamers want to see any benefits. Luckily it looks like Qualcomm already has partners lined up.

Snapdragon Game Super Resolution will work later this year with top games

Over time more studios will no doubt support these features, but things are starting small. Initially Qualcomm is working with a handful of partners for upcoming top games. The most notable of which is Activision for its upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile.

Erik Beran, Technical Director of Mobile Programming at Activision states “by tapping into the unique capabilities of the Snapdragon Game Super Resolution technology, our development team has been able to easily enhance the upscaling and rendering performance of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile on a variety of different mobile devices. Which will ultimately deliver our players potential benefits in increased framerate, sharper graphics and extended battery life.”

Aside from Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, Farming Simulator 23 Mobile, Jade Dynasty: New Fantasy, Return To Empire, Justice Mobile, and Naraka Bladepoint Mobile will all support Snapdragon GSR as well.

Gamers can prioritize these features based on their preferences

All of these improvements are bound to make Android games better than they ever have been. Provided developers implement the support for them. What’s more is that Qualcomm says gamers will be able to prioritize the features of Snapdragon GSR based on their preferences.

Depending on what they most value at the time, gamers can choose to upscale their game to a higher resolution, boost performance to a faster fps, or extend battery life of their device while gaming. So by the sounds of it, while Snapdragon GSR will have all of these features, it may not do all three simultaneously.

Gamers will choose which improvement they want to take advantage of. Similar to how gamers on PS5 can choose to play a game in Quality Mode for better graphics, or Performance Mode for faster frame rate. But it can’t be both at the same time.
