After an agonizing cancellation due to inclimate weather, Siouxsie Sioux was finally able to perform her first U.S. shows in 15 years Sunday night, May 21, as part of the Eighties-geared Cruel World festival.
Fans lucky enough to catch the show have started sharing videos from the concert, including a show-closing encore of the 1980 Siouxsie and the Banshees song, “Israel.” The last time Siouxsie had performed the song was 2013, at Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival in London.
There were also renditions of “Happy House” (famously sampled by the Weeknd), “Kiss Them for Me,” and “Arabian Knights.” During her first encore, Sioxsie busted out another rarity, “About to Happen,” which she hadn’t performed since 2008 (per Setlist.fm).
Siouxsie was initially scheduled to perform at Cruel World in Pasadena, California on Saturday, but the concert was abruptly cut short due to “unsafe weather and lightning strikes in the area.” Siouxsie’s set, however, was quickly rescheduled for the next evening at the nearby Rose Bowl.
During the Human League’s and Pop’s set Saturday, festival goers were instructed at the direction of the Pasadena Fire Department to exit the event site and move to protected areas; the venue never reopened, and Siouxsie’s headlining set — her only North American show on 2023 — was canceled.
Fans, many of who traveled to Cruel World specifically for the rare Siouxsie show, turned to social media to express their disappointment about the situation: Cruel World marked her first U.S. show since her 2008 tour, and will be her only concert in North America this year.
Thankfully, organizers announced Sunday, “Siouxsie and Iggy Pop will be back at Brookside at the Rose Bowl Sunday, May 21 with Siouxsie performing an extended set.”
Anyone who had a pass to Saturday’s festivities will be allowed access into Sunday’s 5 p.m. show, organizers added.
Cruel World 2023 also featured weather-unaffected sets by Echo & The Bunnymen, Gary Numan, Billy Idol, Love & Rockets, Berlin and more.
