Guerdy Abraira took to her Instagram page on Wednesday morning to share some upsetting news with her fans and followers.
Amid production on the upcoming sixth season of The Real Housewives of Miami, Guerdy revealed she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer as she opened up about the “intense” process and thanked her many supporters.
“In March, I found out some news about my health. I was in St. Barts having the time of my life when my doctor called me with results following a regular mammogram checkup,” Guerdy began in her May 10 post. “I have breast cancer.”
“It took me a while to process it all and this is why I took a break from social media last month as many noticed. Many of you reached out to check on me and I am thankful for your caring gestures,” she continued. “For now I am preparing for my upcoming surgery and then will come my treatment plan. This process is definitely intense and what I ask of you is empowerment not pity.”
According to Guerdy, she’s not taking the news sitting down, and she is instead planning to “guerdyfy” the cancer, as she does with “everything else in [her] life.”
“I am lucky that this breast cancer was discovered at an early stage – it is still scary of course, but I have love and support from those around me and that alone is the fuel that I need,” she added. “For those who do not get health checks regularly, I urge you to. Your life depends on it.”
News of Guerdy’s cancer comes just four months after her RHOM co-star, tennis icon Martina Navratilova, wife of Julia Lemigova, confirmed her own diagnosis of both throat and breast cancer.
During Martina’s cancer battle, Guerdy appeared on Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast, where she discussed the “very, very positive” prognosis.
“It’s on the preventative side, when they found out, it’s early. And we [pray], and that’s it. We’re keeping our head down and [hoping] for the best for her,” she said in February. “They’re in great spirits, that’s the good news.”
Thankfully, months later, Martina and Julia confirmed Martina was “cancer-free.”
Speaking out on Piers Morgan‘s TalkTV, Julia said she was “so proud” of her wife, who went through treatment with “so much strength and positivity.”
“When your wife is diagnosed with cancer – and especially two cancers – it puts life into perspective. Everything that seems to be important is suddenly not that important,” Julia noted.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Guerdy and her family at this time.
The Real Housewives of Miami season six is currently in production and expected to begin airing on Bravo and streaming on Peacock later this year.
