Rebel Ridge has become an unexpected hit for Netflix worldwide.

Directed by Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin), the action thriller follows former Marine Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) who is forced to wrestle his way through small-town corruption as he attempts to post bail for his cousin.

Other members of the cast include Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, and James Cromwell.

Is a sequel to Rebel Ridge happening?

At the time of writing (September 17), Netflix has not officially green-lit a sequel. With the film’s success, however, there’s a strong chance a follow-up will be on the cards.

Along with hitting the number one spot on the Netflix film chart worldwide, Rebel Ridge was watched for 68.2 million hours in its first three days, according to Netflix figures. This is the highest opening week hours for a non-franchise film on the platform, and coupled with the positive critical reception, a sequel feels almost inevitable.

What is director Jeremy Saulnier working on next?

The big question is whether director Jeremy Saulnier would return for a sequel. He’s never done a sequel before to his past films, and he’s recently expressed in an interview how he’s already writing his next project which will be different in tone to Rebel Ridge.

“I’m currently writing something that’s a little more in the Green Room universe,” Saulnier told The Playlist. “Because with Rebel Ridge, I was exploring a new side. I was just tired of everything I do being oppressive. But I’ve kinda gone back. It has to do with music and Halloween and fun shit.”

As such, any potential sequel might be a while off yet, unless Netflix opts to go for a new director.
