In partnership with STUDIOCANAL

NME is delighted to announce plans for a special print edition celebrating the life and legacy of acclaimed singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse – and to mark the release of new film Back to Black. There will also be a free NME Screens preview event where fans can see the film before it is released in cinemas (April 12).

The 36-page magazine is an in-depth exploration of Winehouse’s story and features never-seen-before photos of Amy, captured during her extraordinary rise during the 2000s by photographer Tom Oxley. Other features include a guide to Amy’s beloved London borough of Camden – as told by The Priscillas frontwoman Jennifer Brown, who runs the Rock ‘N’ Roll Camden Walking Tour – and a deep-dive into the film’s score, composed by Bad Seeds Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. ‘Why Amy Still Matters’ – including interviews with emerging artists Felixthe1st, Gretchin, Kwaku Asante and more – further examines Amy’s impact and her continued relevance to new music in 2024. The magazine also includes exclusive interviews with Back to Black star Marisa Abela (Industry) and director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy).

Get your free copy of the magazine when it is distributed across the UK on April 11 – you can find out where at the bottom of this article.

Back To Black
Get to know the cast of ‘Back to Black’ via exclusive new interviews

The NME Screens Back to Black event takes place tomorrow (April 9) at Everyman King’s Cross in London. Tickets are free and more information is available here.

Taylor Johnson’s Back to Black tells the story of Amy Winehouse in a feature film for the first time. It follows Amy from her teenage years, growing up in north London, through her meteoric rise to Grammy-winning sensation in the 2000s. Alongside Abela on the cast are BAFTA-nominated actor Jack O’Connell, Lesley Manville, Eddie Marsan and Juliet Cowan. Screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh (Nowhere Boy, Ian Curtis biopic Control) has written the screenplay.

“We really wanted to do it from [Amy’s] perspective, and through her eyes; to take us on the journey through her music, and through her words, so that we’re back with her,” Taylor-Johnson told Empire earlier this year.
