With the release of Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom coming this Friday, the Nintendo Australia YouTube channel has dropped a new commercial to promote the game. To say the commercial tugs at your heart strings a little bit is probably a huge understatement.

If you play games as an adult, chances are you run into the scenario in this commercial quite often. Or at least some of the time. And it’s more or less the antithesis of the issues you had when you were a kid. When you were growing up, you had all the time in the world to play games. But you probably didn’t have your own money to buy them. As an adult, you now have your own money to buy all the games you’ve ever wanted. But you have much less time to play them. Especially as you get older.

However, those moments where you do get to play can bring an immeasurable amount of joy and wonder. That’s how it seems to go for the gentleman in this commercial.

Nintendo’s new Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom commercial hits home

The beauty of this commercial is that Nintendo has managed to encapsulate the very essence of having gaming as a hobby for someone who’s in their mid to late 30s and up.

In the short 2-minute video, Nintendo simultaneously punches you in the gut and helps you remember that the child in you never dies. As long as you’re able to hold onto your imagination and sense of wonder.

The man in the commercial is basically all of us. He goes about his daily life. Traveling to and from his 9-5 day job. For a few fleeting moments on his bus ride home, he stares off into the distance. What’s he daydreaming about, you wonder. Well, I’ll tell you. He’s daydreaming about games. And in this case one game in particular. Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

As soon as he arrives home, he’s able to reawaken his inner-child like he was Link emerging from the shrine of resurrection after a 100-year nap. Almost immediately transported back to a simpler time. And just like that, he’s able to rediscover adventure. Grasping onto those little moments in between the hustle and bustle of sometimes monotonous adulthood is not always easy. But it sure is fulfilling.

Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases on May 12 for Nintendo Switch. And here’s hoping that everyone who picks it up can rediscover adventure.
