The long-awaited relaunch of MultiVersus has attracted a peak of 114,515 concurrent players on Steam, but fans aren’t happy with all the changes.
Player First Games’ fighting title MultiVersus originally launched in 2022 but shut down last June. After months of silence, it was confirmed to relaunch earlier this year and yesterday (May 28) the game finally returned.
During the first 24 hours, MultiVersus saw a peak of 114,515 concurrent players on Steam, while over 25,000 fans are currently playing the brawler (via SteamDB). During the beta, the peak was 153,433 concurrent players.
The game is also available as a free download for PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
Despite taking a 30-minute break to roll out a much-needed update, the launch of MultiVersus has been straightforward but the game currently has a “mixed” review rating on Steam.

“So I waited a long time for this like many other people have. Maybe it’s too soon to tell, but the game feels really bad in comparison to before. It feels very clunky and slow now. Lots of recovery on certain attacks or animation locks. I thought they were supposed to make this game better,” wrote one player with another adding: “This game could’ve been great, but the decision to slow the gameplay down whilst NOT fixing the bugs from the beta is going to be the downfall of it. What a shame.”
Others have criticised the changes in currency, the removal of being able to test out characters and skins in practice mode and the current speed of the game.
Elsewhere, the MultiVersus subreddit is currently full of threads like “Everything that changed for the worse from the beta period”, “Am I crazy or did they spend a year removing more features than they added?” and “this feels more like a beta than the beta”.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, MultiVersus director Tony Huynh said the relaunch allowed the studio to “rebuild the entire game from the ground up” in order for them to “deliver the best experience possible.”
In other news, Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be released on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
