Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have a style all their own, no doubt about it. They may seem altogether uninterested in the red carpet excitement, but this event’s stage is all theirs. Perhaps most memorable was their debut in 2005, celebrating Chanel, when both rocked a natural curl and brightening jewel-toned necklaces, as their flowing dresses quickly became their iconic Met Gala looks. Not to be forgotten, however, were the looks the twins donned at the 2013 PUNK exhibit celebration. Both were flowing with just a bit of sparkle, a refreshing and welcome take on the night’s theme. 2005: “Chanel”
Mary-Kate and Ashley, in Oscar de la Renta and a vintage dress, respectively, attended their first Met Gala in 2005, which celebrated the house of Chanel.
2006: “AngloMania”
The sisters wore Badgley Mischka looks in 2006.
2007: “Poiret: King of Fashion”
The pair arrived separately to the 2007 Met Gala. Ashley, on the arm of Christian Louboutin, wore a plunging white outfit.
Mary-Kate Olsen, meanwhile, contrasted her sister in a Lily Et Cie gown.
2008: Superheroes: Fashion And Fantasy
The Olsens wore Diane von Furstenberg and Louboutin heels in 2008.
2009: “The Model as Muse”
Ashley showed up to the 2009 ball in The Row.
Mary-Kate again went the vintage route in 2009, opting for a lace dress from Christian Lacroix.
2011: “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty”
Ashley, wearing Dior, returned to the Met Gala in 2011.
In a rare embrace of color, Mary-Kate went with a fiery Givenchy gown in 2011.
2012: “Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations”
Mary-Kate Olsen came solo to the 2012 ball. She wore The Row.
2013: “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”
Ashley opted for a ladylike Dior dress for the 2013 “Punk” themed ball.
That year, Mary-Kate styled her vintage Chanel dress with a Balmain coat.
2014: “Charles James: Beyond Fashion”
The designers doubled up in vintage from Chanel and Gianfranco Ferré in 2014.
2015: “China: Through the Looking Glass”
The theme was “China: Through the Looking Glass,” but the Olsen sisters both opted for black vintage numbers from John Galliano’s run at Dior.
2016: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”
2016 called for unamed vintage looks.
2017: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between
Once again, the sisters wore outfits from so deep inside their vintage collections that the designers weren’t publicly identified.
2018: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination”
For the “Heavenly Bodies” exhibit, Ashley’s metallic gown was vintage Paco Rabanne. Mary-Kate’s black dress was from The Row, of course.
2019: “Camp: Notes on Fashion”
For the “Notes on Camp” Met Gala, the sisters once again opted to coordinate in vintage leather looks from Chanel.
