Windows Subsystem for Android has added support for local file sharing. The feature allows users to share their files with Android apps.
As the latest OS developed by Microsoft, Windows 11 provides good integration with Android, though there is still plenty of room for improvement. Microsoft is now bringing local file sharing to Windows Subsystem for Android to reinforce ties between the two operating systems.
As per the company’s announcement, users can now share their documents and pictures with the Subsystem. This means you can directly upload a video from your desktop device to your social media app or edit a video in a mobile app.

Moreover, you can drag and drop files from File Explorer to any open Android app that supports sharing files. Apps with support for pasting files copied to the Windows clipboard will also receive read access to the shared file. Those who constantly switch between mobile and desktop apps for work will certainly find this feature helpful.
Of course, the company notes the file path in the Subsystem is changed. The files on the Subsystem will be shared as “/sdcard/Windows.” Any file or folder stored out of the Windows user profile folder is exempt from file sharing. Additionally, only files the Subsystem saves to “/sdcard/Windows” are available to Windows.
As for privacy, Microsoft says apps can retain access to the files and folder after the user’s permission. The permission can be revoked at any time. The Subsystem also uses antivirus software to scan malicious apps that might abuse permission.
The company further explains that hidden files and folders are excluded from sharing. This restriction could help users prevent apps from accessing their private data. Likewise, the cloud storage files are not accessible through Android apps and must be downloaded to your device.
The feature is activated by default for preview users. You can also turn it off or on in the Windows Subsystem for Android Settings.
