Starfield is absolutely littered with guns to use throughout your time exploring the universe, but did you know you can get one of the best guns in the game pretty early on? Well, you can. It’s called The Mutineer and you’re definitely going to want to add this to your arsenal. The Mutineer is a powerful pistol that deals out massive physical damage. As some stats are randomized yours might be slightly different from the one I’ve acquired, but it’ll still pack a huge punch nonetheless. It just might not be exactly the same on damage numbers.

Fear not, though. Because The Mutineer will still be your go-to for taking down nearly all enemies with ease. I promise you. Except for maybe Terrormoprhs. I haven’t personally run into one of those yet so I don’t know how it holds up against what is arguably one of the toughest enemies in the game. If not the toughest.

If you want to grab one of the best guns in Starfield for yourself, we’ll walk you through the process. It’s pretty easy to get and just requires a little commitment on your part. Specifically with time. That being said, be aware there are minor spoilers here for the campaign. Though, nothing too revealing. You’ll also need to make sure you have advanced lockpicking as an available skill. This is only the first in the lockpicking skill tree, so you only need one skill point to get it. If you don’t have that, go do some other stuff and gain one skill point, get advanced lockpicking, and then come back to this guide.

Why is The Mutineer one of the best guns in Starfield?

Well for starters, it comes with extremely high physical damage per shot at a base level. But it also fires bullets in a three-round burst, and it has a stat where if you’re in space, it gets a 30% damage buff to your shots. This makes it well-suited for the space pirate lifestyle. Even if you’re playing the game as the hero who follows the rules, it’ll still be good at dropping enemies. Be aware that it does have a damage debuff too. If you’re on-planet, it takes a 15% decrease to damage output. That being said, it still kicks because it already starts at such a high physical damage output. In short, you want it.

How to get The Mutineer

The beginning process for this is pretty straightforward. You just need to play the game. It won’t be too long before you get to a point that leads you to the actual first step in getting the gun. Which is a specific mission. So just play through the beginning of the game and you’ll end up there. Let’s jump into it.

Start the ‘Into The Unknown’ mission

This is part of the main mission storyline and you will get to this mission after you reach New Atlantis and find yourself at the Lodge. The main hub of Constellation. You will take on many missions as part of Constellation. But this one specifically is important to The Mutineer. So definitely focus on it as early as you can.

Go to ‘The Eye’

Starfield How to get one of the best guns (3)

As part of the mission, you will need to head to a location called ‘The Eye.’

Talk to Vladimir

At The Eye you will meet Vladimir. A member of Constellation and just the person you want to talk to. In fact, as part of the mission, your task is to talk to Vladimir. We won’t say about what since it ties into the main story. But you’ll learn soon enough.

Talk to Vladimir a second time

After you finish talking to him as part of the mission Into The Unknown, don’t leave The Eye just yet. Enter a conversation with Vladimir a second time. You’ll have a dialogue option to say “So you’re retired from the Crimson Fleet. Didn’t know that happened.” He will then tell you the location of his lake house.

Go to Vladimir’s lake house

Now you need to go to Vladimir’s lake house. It’s far to the east of where The Eye is so you’ll have to jump systems quite a bit. If you don’t have a direct path there because it’s too far, that’s not a problem. You simply need to jump to the farthest system you can. Then repeat this process until you can jump directly where Vladimir’s lake house is. Which is on Syrma VII-a. Be aware, this location is high level. So don’t wander off if you’re doing this really early in the game. You shouldn’t encounter any enemies at the house or in its immediate vicinity.

But if you wander too far from the house or the ship landing area, you can encounter alien enemies that are much higher level than you (around level 60), and you’ll probably die. So, you know, don’t do that.

Enter Vladimir’s lake house and go downstairs

Now that you’ve landed, you can run up to the house and go inside. You can run up a direct path or just jump up the side of the rock face on the outer edge of the home like I did. You just need to get up to the home to get to the door and go inside. Once inside, go downstairs and look for a locked door. This will have the advanced lock on it that you need to pick.

Pick the advanced lock to get inside the room

This is where that advanced lockpicking is going to come in handy. Vladimir was part of the Crimson Fleet, remember? He’s not just going to leave his most valuable stuff free and open for anyone to grab. Not to worry though. You’re an advanced thief and no locked door can stop you. Unless it has an expert or master lock then you’re out of luck. Thankfully, this is not one of those locks.

Grab The Mutineer off the desk

Starfield How to get one of the best guns (9)

Once you’re inside the locked room, you’ll find The Mutineer just sitting on the desk right next to the lamp. Pick it up and you’re done. You’ve now acquired one of the best guns in Starfield. It may only be a rare gun. But it’s a “UNIQUE” rare gun. And this is what helps set it apart from other rare guns Starfield will throw at you. It has a special three round burst that it fires off and it has that really high physical damage output. These two things alone make it a very strong weapon to use in almost any fight.

Unfortunately, it chews through ammo faster than some other pistols because of its burst fire. So make sure to stock up on some for it when you have the chance. If you need ammo and have the credits to buy it, just find an ammo vendor and buy out their stock. Then sit down in a chair nearby and past the time for 48 hours. Vendor stock will be refreshed and you can buy more. You don’t have to do this of course. But it’s highly recommended. It’s either that or you use other guns till you find more ammo for The Mutineer. Which is totally fine too. But using The Mutineer is much more fun. Especially if you’re trying to live out your playthrough as a space pirate.

Starfield is out now for PC via Steam, as well as Xbox Series X|S consoles. It can also be played through Game Pass on either of those platforms if you have a subscription.
