Harrison Ford has confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be his last time starring in the iconic franchise.
Directed by James Mangold, this is the fifth instalment of the series and the first film not to be directed by Steven Spielberg – who now serves as the executive producer alongside George Lucas.
While speaking with Total Film Ford said: “This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character – I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film.”
Ford also spoke about this exit from the franchise last year, after the trailer debuted at Disney’s D23 Expo.
“Indiana Jones movies are about mystery and adventure,” Ford said at the event. “But they’re also about heart, and I’m really, really happy that we have a really human story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick your ass.”
Star Wars actor also denied rumours of him appearing in the television series that is in development. He stated that he “will not be involved in that if it does come to fruition.”
The fifth instalment of the legendary action-adventure film takes place in the years depicted between the 1989 film The Last Crusade and 2008’s Crystal Skull. Along with Ford the film’s cast includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Oliver Richters, Ethann Isidore and Mads Mikkelsen.
The synopsis for Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny reads: “Experience the return of legendary hero, Indiana Jones, in the fifth instalment of this beloved swashbuckling series of films. Finding himself in a new era, approaching retirement, Indy wrestles with fitting into a world that seems to have outgrown him. But as the tentacles of an all-too-familiar evil return in the form of an old rival, Indy must don his hat and pick up his whip once more to make sure an ancient and powerful artifact doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.”
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to release in cinemas June 30, 2023.
In other Indiana Jones news, famed composer John Williams has seemingly announced that he will no longer be retiring after the release of Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny.
In an interview last June, Williams revealed he was set to retire from scoring films after a 50 year plus career that’s seen him score the likes of Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Harry Potter and more.
“At the moment I’m working on Indiana Jones 5, which Harrison Ford – who’s quite a bit younger than I am – I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also,” he said.
