Many of you are probably using the Google News app at this point, so you’ll be glad to know that it’s finally getting the Material You redesign. With this move, Google News joins Gmail, Photos, and some other Google-made apps who already received this treatment.

Google News app finally gets Material You design, although the change is not complete

Do note that not everything is perfect just yet, though. It doesn’t seem like Google finished the redesign. One crucial feature is missing, dynamic theming. The Google News app interface won’t adapt to the colors of your home screen wallpaper, unfortunately. The app uses a blue accent by default, and you cannot alter it.

So, what’s different? Well, you’ll now see pill-shaped indicators on the bottom navigation bar. These indicators will show you which tab you’re currently viewing. That’s the most notable change, as we’re waiting for the dynamic theming implementation.

Yes, dynamic theming is coming, as the change is not exactly complete without it. When, however, we have no idea. This change is definitely not complete, though, so we do expect that functionality to arrive soon.

Google updated quite a few apps, but not all of them

Not all Google apps received the Material You makeover, not at all. Most of the major ones have, however. It will take time for Google to change everything, though it would be nice to have complete cohesion between them as soon as possible.

Google did not announce a timeline for those changes, unfortunately. So, we can only sit and wait. Now, this Google News change seems to be implemented via a server-side change. I did not notice that my Google News updated, and yet I have the new design. So, if it hasn’t rolled out to you yet, just sit and wait, it’s coming soon.
