If there’s anything we’ve learned from Gen Z, it’s that words can mean more than we once thought they could. Take, for instance, “to cook.” Cooking has transcended beyond its original culinary roots to become a sartorial expression used when an ensemble doubles down on slay. Last week, the stars “cooked” everywhere, from movie premieres to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. They tapped into their inner goddess and the results were distinct ensembles that reflected individual values and higher personalities.

At the final evening of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former First Lady Michelle Obama and actress Kerry Washington took their stand and did so in true style. Elsewhere, movie premieres like “The Supremes At Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat” premiere in Los Angeles and “Blink Twice” in London presented Sana Lathan and Zoe Kravitz in stunning red numbers. Lathan made an impact in a conservative offering with a sliver of skin in sight, while Kravitz showed more skin in a slip dress and a matching belt that added dimension. In other words, movie premieres served as mini booths for exhibiting stylish stars this past week.

The Looks

Apparently, cutouts were a thing of choice last week. Naomi Ackie and Mary J. Blige affirmed this claim in neutral tones with interesting cut-outs on the midriff. Ackie was at the “Blink Twice” movie premiere in London, looking incredible in a draped Loewe dress and her attractive smile. Meanwhile, Ms. Blige brought the sass to her “Breathing” music video in a white Abdul Sall Couture number punched up with Alexis Bittar jewelry.

The belly-showing trend continued, but differently, as the other team chose sheer options. From Solange Knowles in a monochrome getup to Monica Denise in a bold see-through top styled with feather-adorned bottoms, it was a parade of skin. The case seemed to be, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it.” Summer may be fast winding up but the summer bawdy stays applying pressure.

We have to spotlight the safe haven where Black women gathered both to make style statements and exhibit purpose-driven initiatives: the “Sip and Slay” event in New York by Sabrina Elba. The beautypreneur showed up to the event in a back-baring denim set with a turtle neckline and a voluminous silhouette, which she styled with white pumps and a pixie cut. The look was chic and comfortable. Apart from walking in her purpose and showing other Black women the ropes, Elba’s choice of minimal shades and simplistic style sets her apart in a sophisticated way.

Designer Monse also had a busy week, dressing up dignitaries like Michelle Obama for her inspiring speech at the final evening of the Democratic National Convention. The former First Lady was clad in a criss-cross jacket and cropped pants from the brand. The look was neatly tailored and the waist-cinching belt diligently fulfilled its purpose.
