Femininity was a main event this past week. The nails served, the makeup looks delivered, and the frocks swayed in unison with the confidence of their wearers. Simply put, a healthy dose of self-awareness was portrayed with a dash of risqué. The stars chose to be a tad scandalous on the carpet with outfits that did a number on the frames, fitting like the gloves of a ready phlebotomist. Conspicuous details such as cutouts, high slits, see-throughs, and plunging necklines suggested an air of “sexy and I know it.” From the Essence Fest to D&G’s Alta Satoria and Alta Moda shows in Italy, skin-baring seemed to be the theme of last week’s fashion.

The Looks

Disney and Balmain collaborated for Lion King’s 30th anniversary to birth a limited collection featuring artsy African designs that boasted unique craftsmanship with intricate detailing. To celebrate this milestone, model Jourdan Dunn attended the event in a cleavage-baring mini dress abundant in personality. The dress featured all-over gold adornments curated with intentionality. She paired this with a pixie cut, subtle makeup, and gold earrings that added a touch of glamour to the ensemble.

As stated earlier, flirty dresses were the week’s highlight. The Bailey sisters had their fill of slinky frocks. Chloe Bailey posed on Instagram, professing her love for cutout dresses in yet another black turtleneck midriff-showing number. Meanwhile, her sister Halle could pass for a sultry mermaid in a green high-slit dress at the D&G Alta Sartoria show in Italy. It’s 2024, and it’s safe to say that skin-baring numbers have asserted themselves as core components in our fashion conversations.

Lastly, as for Fantasia, you can be sure she’ll always be in the fashion business. The singer showcased her patriotism at the A Capitol Fourth concert, where she sang clad in a white form-fitting Christian Siriano balloon-hem dress styled with strappy white sandal heels. Talk about unproblematic and stylish! Her second look, an all-black Alexandre Vauthier ensemble enlivened with Alexis Bittar jewelry, came with an equal dose of pump and flair. Daniel Hawkins, Fantasia’s stylist, has been on a no-miss streak these past years, and the duo is arguably one of the best to ever do it.
