The Bahamas is the number one destination in the Caribbean and Atlantic for spring break travel in 2024, according to new data from travel insurance provider Squaremouth.

While recent crime waves and travel advisories have raised safety concerns in the island nation, tourism leaders emphasize that the Bahamas remains welcoming to visitors through increased security measures.

Bahamas Spring Break Trips Surge in Bookings, Costs

Squaremouth reported this week that the Bahamas is the only Caribbean destination ranked among the top 10 most popular places for spring break this year. It outpaced heavyweights like Italy, Spain and France in bookings.

Bahamas trips insured through Squaremouth are averaging $5,325 in total cost, 11.2% pricier than last spring but still below the overall average vacation cost of $7,719 this year.

Travel Advisory Highlights Crime, Prompts Security Ramp-Up

The report comes on the heels of a January 26th travel advisory from the U.S. State Department, warning visitors of heightened gang activity and violent crime throughout the Bahamas. While the advisory level remained at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), a string of 18 murders in January prompted the updated alert. Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis responded by outlining increased security efforts, including more police presence, surveillance technology, stricter firearm laws and additional police training.

Activities like hiking, scuba diving, and cycling are up 23%, especially in destinations like Australia, Peru, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. Searches for Asia travel are also spiking dramatically, led by Hong Kong, Taipei, and Bangkok.

Domestically, warm weather locales like Florida and Puerto Rico rank high for hotel searches, while more affordable destinations like Kissimmee, Florida gain interest as alternatives to pricier Orlando.

Overall flight costs remain high to many top European destinations this spring, leading budget-focused travelers to routes like New York, Boston, Tampa, Chicago, Toronto, and Latin American hubs.
