Dakota Fanning has revealed that Tom Cruise buys her a new pair of shoes every year for her birthday.
The actor starred alongside Cruise in the 2005 Steven Spielberg film War of the Worlds, when she was just 11 years old.
Fanning played Rachel, the daughter of Cruise’s Ray Ferrier, a dock worker who must protect his family and reunite them when extraterrestrials invade Earth and devastate cities with giant war machines.
Nearly 20 years may have passed since the film was made, but it seems that the two have remained in contact, with the Top Gun star going out of his way to treat her every February 23.
Fanning appeared on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show this week, where she discussed the tradition.
“He always sends me the same thing every year,” Fanning said. “I loved shoes when I was little, and I started to be able to fit into really small adult shoes when I was on the War of the Worlds press tour, so I was really excited about them. So from that birthday on, he always sends me shoes.”
Earlier this week, Cruise was spotted trying to get into Rishi Sunak’s car in central London.
The actor was caught on camera attempting to open the door of an Audi at Battersea Heliport after waving to some of his fans. However, when the door didn’t open, he walked around to his own car, which was parked in the next space. The Prime Minister was later seen getting into the same car.
Last week, Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell shared how the 61-year-old once pranked him by pretending to lose control of his helicopter.
Speaking with GQ, the Anyone But You star shared: “Tom goes, ‘Oh no, oh no,’ and he starts dropping the helicopter over London. I was like, ‘Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?’”
