“I feel like it’s important to be honest and transparent about our vulnerabilities and what we’re going through,” she said during the set

One thing about Chlöe is that she knows how to get sexy. On Tuesday, NPR released her Tiny Desk performance as the musician jazzified her songs and showed off her vocal prowess.

The R&B star opened her performance with “Surprise,” offering an acoustic rendition of the track before asking the crowd, “Do you ever wonder who else is fucking your man?” to perform “Body Do.”

“Make it sexy, y’all,” she repeated as she danced along to her track. “This next one I’m going to sing is dedicated to all of my exes because I know they want that old thing back,” she introduced “I Don’t Mind,” enhanced with the trumpet with a plunger mute.

According to NPR, Chlöe was originally supposed to feature two backup singers for her performance, but due to flight cancelations, only one backup singer was able to make the trip. Ultimately, “the team decided the ensemble would go without” any background vocalists at all.

“I feel like it’s important to be honest and transparent about our vulnerabilities and what we’re going through,” she said before a soulful rendition of “In Pieces.” “And, a lot of times I’ve been broken down, and the cracks will be left, but that doesn’t make me imperfect. That doesn’t take away any beauty I have deep inside. And it’s important to surround ourselves with the people that appreciate us in all our glory.”

The singer wrapped her show with a performance of “Cheatback.”

Chlöe’s performance marks her return to the NPR Tiny Desk after her sister joined her for a performance in December 2020 to perform songs from Chloe x Halle’s LP Ungodly Hour. She also recently covered Gunna’s single “Fukumean.”
