“I don’t like the headlines I am reading … that’s exactly why I quit the business 4 years ago !!!” singer writes
Britney Spears does not want to hurt anyone with her upcoming memoir, The Woman in Me, even though the excerpts that have come from it so far have been bombshells about her conservatorship and relationship with her father, her claims that she had an abortion while dating Justin Timberlake and that he broke up with her via text. In a statement, she said that she hasn’t felt good about the headlines that have so far come from excerpts in the book, which comes out Tuesday.
“My book’s purpose was not to offend anyone by any means !!!” the singer wrote on Instagram on Friday. “That was me then … that is in the past !!! I don’t like the headlines I am reading … that’s exactly why I quit the business 4 years ago !!!
“Most of the book is from 20 years ago … I have moved on and it’s a beautiful clean slate from here !!!” she continued. “I am here to establish it that way for the rest of my entire life !!! Either way, that is the last of it and shit happens !!! This is actually a book I didn’t know needed to be written … although some might be offended, it has given me closure on all things for a better future !!! Hopefully I can enlighten people who feel particularly alone in most cases or hurt or misunderstood !!! Again, my motive for this book was not to harp on my past experiences which is what the press is doing and it’s dumb and silly !!! I have moved on since then !!!” She ended her message with the book title as a hashtag.
Neither Timberlake nor Spears’ father have commented on the headlines that come out so far as a result of the book.
Recent revelations from the book that have leaked online include that Spears first learned about the #FreeBritney movement online from a nurse at a rehab facility, that her drug of choice back in her party days was Adderall, and that she doesn’t feel particularly motivated to make any new music. “Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment,” she wrote in the book. “It’s time for me not to be someone who other people want; it’s time to actually find myself.”

Actress Michelle Williams narrates the majority of the audiobook edition of the memoir, which will come out on the same day. “This book has been a labor of love and all the emotions that come with it,” Spears has said. “Reliving everything has been exciting, heart-wrenching, and emotional, to say the least. For those reasons, I will only be reading a small part of my audiobook. I am so grateful to the amazing Michelle Williams for reading the rest of it.”
“I stand with Britney,” Williams said.
