StarCraft 3 is rumored to be in development over at Blizzard, according to a new report from Insider Gaming. IG is sourcing the details from a now deleted tweet from Window’s Central’s Jez Corden.

In the tweet, a fan of the franchise asked about Microsoft “reviving” StarCraft when and if the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard goes through. Corden is then reported to have said Microsoft doesn’t need to revive the franchise. A follow up response from a different user asked specifically about StarCraft 3 and whether the game was in development, and if Corden knew anything about the situation. Corden replied by saying “yep,” which suggests that Blizzard may indeed be working on the game.

Now it goes without saying this isn’t a confirmation of any kind. Corden didn’t specifically say “Blizzard is currently developing StarCraft 3.” But the “yep” response to the question and the decision to delete the tweet certainly makes it seem like that may be the case.

StarCraft 3 development may have been inevitable

StarCraft is a long-time series for Blizzard and hasn’t had any new titles since the release of StarCraft 2 back in 2010. Although it did release expansions for the game in the years that followed.

Blizzard hasn’t talked about StarCraft for quite some time either. Which led people to believe the studio may have put the franchise to rest. But that seems unlikely given how popular the first two games were. Especially the first one with it playing a central role in the up and coming esports scene.

Also worth noting is that Blizzard has never publicly stated that it was done with StarCraft. And any omissions about the game are not a confirmation that development would never happen on new titles in the franchise. Blizzard does also have its hands full with other projects. Continued development on Overwatch with the release of Overwatch 2. The recent release of Diablo IV. And who could forget the launch of Dragonflight. Blizzard’s latest expansion for World of Warcraft.

The studio is also working on an unannounced survival adventure game. So it definitely has a lot on its plate. That being said, Blizzard is a big company with a lot employees spread across different teams. And with its other three biggest franchises now having had recent releases, a new StarCraft would make sense.
