An Overwatch 2 mini-series is on the way, confirmed by Blizzard this morning via its Overwatch Twitter account. The animated show will be just three parts long and the first part of the series is due to hit the airwaves on July 6. That’ll be next Thursday if you’re eager to watch and see how things shake out.
While this isn’t quite a TV show and probably not what fans envisioned when they began requesting one years ago, it’s what Blizzard is giving them. The mini-series is officially called Genesis, and will focus on a time period from before the war against robots. Humans and AI living in harmony, with the “AI saving humanity” from its own mistakes, the trailer says.
The brief 1-minute trailer showcases just a little of what fans can expect when the first episode goes live. Which by the way has a runtime of just over 5 minutes according to the YouTube description. There’s at least three main heroes included in the mini-series. Or at least the first episode. With glimpses at Reinhardt, Torbjörn, and Ana. There’s also a chance other heroes from the game show up. But at the moment there’s no hints as to who, or if the entire mini-series will feature just those three.
The Overwatch 2 mini-series is likely to be pretty short
This probably isn’t meant to be a full-blown show with long episodes. It is a mini-series, but even mini-series you might be used to on TV or streaming services have considerable runtimes. With the first episode lasting just over 5 minutes, it seems likely that the others will be close to or around the same length.
And there’s just three parts, so that’s about 15 minutes of animation to enjoy alongside the story. That being said, the mini-series is probably a way for Blizzard to both hype up the upcoming co-op story missions and serve as a means to lay down some backstory.
If the mini-series is popular though, maybe Blizzard will end up creating a proper series down the road. Cross your fingers.
