Although last week soft-pedaled on major events, that was no reason for the best-dressed Black celebrities to take the same approach to style. Despite the scarcity of occasions, the girls made up for the lack thereof in outfits that were hard to ignore. They opted for interesting cuts, luxe textures, and fine silhouettes, pumped up with ample personality. From magazine spreads to social media posts and streetwear, the unspoken theme was a witty combination of glam and sass, and there was nothing regular about that.

The past week saw the stars testing with footwear, especially boots. Although Mary J. Blige has been a boots connoisseur for the longest time, her shoe game never gets boring. The same could be said about Monica Denise, who matched her floral denim boots with a handbag and her manicure. Another chic pick of the week was monochromatic dressing. Both for the minimal and bold fashion girlie, going head-to-toe with a hue gave off a unique appeal. From red to white, the color plays were safe and domineering.

The Looks

Red has always been a powerful hue that somehow manages to boost confidence. Rocking the color in different shades were Chloe Bailey and Mary J. Blige–both with a sultry vibe. Ms. Blige opted for a Jagne lace-up dress with gloves, Sarah Sokol Millinery hat, and Jennifer Lee thigh-high boots. Indeed, the iconic singer always has a good boot in and out of season. Softening the color, Chloe Bailey chose a different shade styled with strappy silver sandals. Her dress, an embellished fringe offering with a deep neckline, did justice to her frame. The red and silver combo hits with that old money energy. Simple, sophisticated, refined, and laid-back, the look was a bit different from her regular edgy choices.

Elsewhere, Alicia Keys pumped up the demand for denim. She chose the denim-on-denim route to show that style is indeed in her genes. The singer paraded in vamped-up utility bottoms with gold accents styled with a gold turtleneck top, denim jacket, and white pumps. The gold tints married denim in an unproblematic union. While gold has been one of the colors of the season, energizing it with top-tier denim is the right choice every time.

Brown is another trendy hue the best-dressed black celebrities are exploring this season. Traditionally associated with fall, it has had its share of the spotlight this summer. Top model Winnie Harlow took the hue for a spin in brown outerwear styled with a white midi dress. Brown and white is as classic as it gets. For a sexy, earthy finish, you can consider a sheer brown dress like Naomi Campbell’s offering for her feature in Harper’s BAZAAR, finished with delicate jewelry and black pumps. Brown serves magic, whether paired with lighter or darker shades.
