“I had problems in my lungs,” she said of the incident

Anitta is grateful for her good health. In a new cover story with InStyle, the Brazilian star revealed that she went through a cancer scare last year that kept her in the hospital for an extended amount of time.

“I had problems in my lungs, I had a cancer [scare],” she told the outlet, explaining that she had multiple tests done to find a diagnosis. “I spent months in the hospital. Nobody could figure out what I had.”

The Brazilian star ended up meeting a shaman who helped her through a spiritual treatment that she says caused her to come “back completely changed.” When she returned from the retreat, she said that she was inexplicably healed.

The health scare even inspired her silly single “Used to Be” and helped her change her mindset on life and how she approached suffering. On the song, which she performed at the 2023 MTV VMAs earlier this week, she sings, “I used to be a hoe, but now I ain’t no more/Been swimmin’ through the water, now I’m back to shore.”

During the interview with InStyle, Anitta also spoke up about how her stage name is a character that helps protect her. She explained that balancing her personal life with the over-the-top nature of her Anitta persona has taken a “lot of therapy.”

“It’s like two different humans in one body,” she explains. “Because I think Anitta is pretty much a big ho,” she said. “Right now I want to have family and stuff, but this character doesn’t let me.”
