Activision says it has the next four years of Call of Duty games planned with titles already laid out through 2027. The publisher is set to release its next big title on November 10 with Modern Warfare III. It’ll be a continuation of the story from Modern Warfare II and shakes things up for the franchise as game sequels have never been back-to-back before. That’s just part of the planning that’s going into the franchise these days.

And it’s in no small part due to two huge factors revolving around Call of Duty as a game. Firstly, Call of Duty as a series has been around for two decades now. And all that time and experience has certainly paid off in improving subsequent titles. Secondly, the Call of Duty franchise has over 3,000 developers working on it at this point. And that’s a lot of talent to spread out across current and future projects.

Call of Duty: the road to 2027

Activision obviously isn’t sharing a ton of information about its upcoming games beyond Modern Warfare III. But there are some things that the publisher is saying that are likely to drive up excitement. In an interview with GamesBeat, Activision President Rob Kostich touches on various details surrounding the Call of Duty franchise. In addition to discussing Call of Duty’s successful 20-year history, Kostich lays out why he believes the franchise has been able to survive this long.

It all breaks down to keeping things fresh and keeping the players from burning out. Kostich also suggests that Call of Duty’s best days are in front of it. “To me, what’s really incredible over these 20 years is I look at it – actually, when I look forward from where we are today, I think our opportunities in front of us are greater than anything we’ve had before us,” Kostich said. Kostich continues by saying that for what they’re currently working on they have games planned out all the way through 2027. Additionally he says that the teams have done games in the future and games in the past. And he thinks that they’ve struck a balance and found a happy medium for what will keep players engaged.
