Iberia, Spain’s flagship carrier, has launched the Airbus A321XLR—the first narrow-body, single-aisle aircraft in the world capable of operating transoceanic routes.
The XLR stands for “Extra-long Range,” indicating that this aircraft is designed to set new benchmarks in modern transatlantic travel.
This new-generation Airbus can cover up to 4,000 nautical miles (approximately 5,400 miles or 7,408 kilometers) thanks to its cutting-edge structural, aerodynamic and software enhancements.
Notable features include an integrated central fuel tank “powered by state-of-the-art CFM LEAP-1A engines,” enabling transoceanic flights with 30% less fuel consumption per seat compared to previous models.
“One of the great innovations of the A321XLR is to operate transoceanic routes with a single-aisle aircraft, offering a premium service at the same level as that of our A330 or A350 and complying with our commitment to reducing emissions, since it consumes around 30% less than wide-body models,” says the company’s website.
The inaugural outbound flight departed from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport on November 14 at 12:35 pm and successfully landed in Boston at 14:50 local time—half an hour ahead of schedule—after 16 hours in the air.
Currently, the airline is operating just one A321XLR, but it plans to integrate seven more units into its fleet soon. This new generation of aircraft is expected to further expand Iberia’s reach to destinations where landing larger planes is not technically feasible.
“We are very proud to be the first airline in the world to start flying with the A321XLR. This is a real milestone in the aviation industry. This new aircraft model allows us to strengthen our network and fly to new destinations in an efficient and comfortable way for all our customers,” stated Marco Sansavini, President of Iberia.
Can This Compact Airbus Redefine Comfort on Long-Haul Flights?
When you think of a single-aisle plane, you might imagine a cramped, uncomfortable aircraft. Nothing could be further from the truth. The A321XLR was designed to deliver the same high comfort standards found on larger wide-body models like the A330 and A350.
This Airbus accommodates 182 seats, including 14 private business class seats. Each of the latter features a window view and direct aisle access, thanks to their one-behind-the-other configuration.
“These full-flat seats can be turned into beds and feature a wide leather headrest, compartments for personal items and a structure designed to provide comfort and privacy,” says the airline.
Those opting for the economy cabin will have 168 seats to choose from. Of course, it’s not possible to transform them into beds, but you can recline them up to four inches to get some rest. Each seat also includes two pockets for storing personal items.
Regarding entertainment, passengers in business class enjoy individual 18.5-inch 4K screens. Additionally, each seat features a backlit number to assist the crew in locating you during the night if needed.
Economy cabin passengers will also enjoy individual 12-inch 4K screens embedded in each seatback.
Regardless of your seat type, you can connect your Bluetooth headsets and access complimentary Wi-Fi for messaging during your trip.
Other Interesting Aircraft Features
The galleys on the A321XLR come equipped with advanced state-of-the-art amenities, such as air heaters to keep meals warm, bun warmers and even a high-speed espresso machine for tasty brewed coffee.
Last but not least, this aircraft is fitted with four bathrooms featuring motion-sensor taps and pedal-operated waste bins, designed to protect passenger safety.
