Georgia offers outstanding vacation destinations to escape the summer heat. Most of the resorts and campgrounds are available all year. Blythe Island Regional Park and Campground
This beautiful area is located in Brunswick. It offers fresh and saltwater fishing, boating, and swimming. Canoes and kayaks are available for rental. The campground has 97 campsites suitable for RVs and tents, picnic pavilions, tournament horseshoe courts, walking and bike trails, and even a field archery range.
Blythe Island also has a boat launch area, docks, and bait sales. Reservations are required for the campsites during the summer. The Coastal RV Resort and Southern Retreat RV Park are also located in Brunswick, close to Blythe Island and other barrier islands.
Tybee Island
Tybee Island is Georgia’s most popular beach, a short 20-minute drive from Savannah. Hotels, Airbnb facilities, and other short-term rentals are available on this barrier island with three miles of beaches. Special tours are available to look for dolphins and whales in season. The island also offers guided bicycle tours, historic tours, and a Tiki Boat Adventure. Pontoon boats and jet skis can be rented.
Six Flags Over Georgia
Cool off at Six Flags Over Georgia Water Park. This water park offers white water thrills. It is open daily during the summer from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm. Enjoy the wave pool, slide pool, Black Rover Fall, Buccaneer Bay, and other water adventures.
Six Flags is located in Austell, west of Atlanta, at 275 Riverside Parkway.
Jekyll Island
Jekyll Island is one of the most popular barrier islands in Georgia, with many activities available to visitors. The eight miles of beaches, golf courses, riding and hiking trails are only a few of the attractions at this famous island. The island has several resorts, short-term rentals, a campground, and Airbnb accommodations.
One of the major attractions of the island is the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The center is a rehabilitation and education facility for people of all ages, especially children. Sea turtles are often released at Great Dunes Beach Park, part of the island’s biking trail system.
St. Simons Island
The historic St. Simons island has everything from luxury hotels and spa resorts with beautiful swimming pools to golf, fishing charters, convention facilities, and popular wedding sites. It is considered a romantic honeymoon destination in addition to a recreational area with beautiful beaches. It has one of the most photographed lighthouses in the South.
Fort Frederica is a National Monument constructed in 1736 on the island to protect the new British colony from Spanish invaders! Visitors can tour the fort and learn more about the history of the island.
Blue Ridge Mountains
The mountains of North Georgia are always cooler than the popular coastal areas during the summer. Float in tubes down the Chattahoochee River to cool off when you visit the town of Helen, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia. This unique Bavarian style village offer excellent accommodations, wine tasting, and even ziplines. Lodging includes cabins, condos, and a campground.
You can also cool off at the Anna Ruby Falls in the Chattachoochee-Oconee National Forest. The twin waterfalls are accessible from a trail at the visitors center.
Callaway Resort in Pine Mountain

Lake Blue Ridge
The 3,290 acre lake is located in Fannin County in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The lake is 11 miles long with 65 miles of shoreline. The pristine Lake Blue Ridge was formed behind a dam on the Toccoa River. Swimming, fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and other water activities make this an ideal escape from the summer heat.
