Jamie xx has shared that The xx are currently working on their new album and are “having a good time” while doing so.

The DJ and producer appeared as a guest on MistaJam’s evening show on Capital Dance (which you can listen to via Capital Dance on Mondays to Thursdays from 7pm – 10pm and on Global Player).

During the show, Jamie opened up about how he and his bandmates – Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sims – are back in the studio and working on their “difficult” forthcoming album.

After being asked by MistaJam about what it is like to be reunited and work again with his fellow bandmates since they have all embarked on solo paths, he said: “Yes, it is like The Avengers! We’ve said it ourselves. It’s always so nice to get back together with them. I mean, they came on stage with me at Glastonbury as well, and I couldn’t stop smiling. I was aware that I was on TV, but I just felt like such a dork.”

He continued: “It was a really lovely moment. And we’ve been in the studio again recently and it just feels like old times,” confirming that they are working on new xx music. Speaking about the progress of their work, Jamie said: “I mean, it’s early days. But yeah, we’re having a good time.”

He also shared that he has no idea what the sound will be like and elaborated on how each member is bringing their own thing to the table.

“I think that was the idea of us going out and doing our own things,” he said. “So, we’re further apart, I guess, and then when we get back into the studio it is a bit more of a challenge and we have bigger pools to draw from. I think it’s going to be difficult when we get a bit more into it, but ultimately that is going to make the record better.”

Previously speaking to NME on the red carpet of the 2024 BRIT Awards about their new music that’s in the works, Romy shared: “We’re just keeping it really open and we’re up for trying new things, but it sounds like us. That’s all I can say right now.

“We’ve learned a lot from our different solo projects and it’s cool to learn from each other again. We grew up together and we had a lot of experiences, but to then have time apart and learn new skills, get new musical ideas and experiences and compare them… it’s been a healthy break.”

If the work with The xx materialises into a full album, it would mark their fourth studio LP and follow on from the trio’s 2017 record ‘I See You’.

Elsewhere, Romy recently released her debut album ‘Mid Air’ – which saw her join forces with Fred Again.., Madonna collaborator Stuart Price and her bandmate Jamie xx.

It was given a glowing five-star review by NME, and described as “a nostalgic but box-fresh dance album that taps into a deep well of feeling”.

“It’s been amazing. You never know how it’s going to go [when] trying something new,” she told NME at the BRITs when asked what it was like to receive such a positive response. “It’s been so fun to get out of my comfort zone.”

As for Jamie xx, he recently announced details of ‘In Waves’ – his first new solo album in nearly a decade.

The xx also reunited at this year’s edition of Glastonbury during Jamie xx’s set. They went on to perform Jamie xx’s 2009 rework of Florence + the Machine‘s ‘You’ve Got the Love’, which itself a cover of the classic 1986 house song by The Source and Candi Staton. Before they took their leave, fans also watched Romy and Sims take part in a group hug with Jamie.
