The team earned a spot in the English top flight after Saturday’s 2-0 victory against relegated Huddersfield, putting them one point behind Championship table-toppers Leicester City.

They are only the 12th team in English football history to record back-to-back promotions from the third tier to the first division, and their return rounds off a 22-year absence from the country’s top table.

Sheeran – a longtime supporter of Ipswich, his childhood club due to him growing up in nearby Framlingham – celebrated the team’s promotion on Saturday (May 4) in Miami, FL where he was currently on tour.

On Monday (May 6) the ‘Thinking Out Loud’ singer attended the Met Gala in New York as a guest of designer Stella McCartney. After making his way through the red carpet, Sheeran headed to London to celebrate with the Ipswich members in person.

“Took the @ipswichtown lads out for a promotion party tonight @luke_woolfenden and @massluongo (I’m with them now and they want a tag),” wrote Sheeran in the caption of an Instagram post.

The group sang along to his 2017 hit ‘Shape Of You’ before leading the group in a chant praising ‘Super Kieran McKenna’.

Elsewhere, Sheeran fans took the time to compare the singer’s Met Gala suit to Zac Efron in High School Musical 3 and Jeff Daniels in Dumb & Dumber.

In other news, the singer recently said that he is working on new music but it’ll likely be a while before it’s released, and shared details of a one-off show to celebrate 10 years of his album ‘X’.
