This year’s Met Gala will hardly be the first for Jennifer Lopez. It will, however, be the first time she’s served as one of the night’s co-chairs, an honor she’s sharing with Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Anna Wintour. Since her debut Costume Institute red carpet in 2004—the original Ben Affleck years—while wearing Dolce & Gabbana, Lopez has been a consistently glamorous and extravagant presence during the first Monday in May.
She’s donned everything from a cheetah-print Michael Kors dress and a slicked-back updo at the 2013 “Punk” gala to a beaded Versace gown that left very little to be curious about just two years later. Lopez has also indulged in more demure moments on the Met steps, like in 2010 when she wore a princess Zuhair Murad gown and 2017’s Valentino look which was a surprisingly tame interpretation of the “Camp” dress code.
All that to say, Lopez’s unique brand of Met Gala fashion is hard to metch—but if anyone can do it, surely it’s the woman who isn’t afraid to get a little “loud.” As we wait to see what the hitmaker has up her sleeve for this year’s theme, “Sleeping: Reawakening Fashion,” glance through all of Jennifer Lopez’s Met Gala red carpet looks, below.
2023: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty”
Lopez paid homage to the late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld in this dramatic Ralph Lauren number complete with a cut-out halter neck, train, and velvet opera gloves.
2021: “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”
Lopez brought the Wild, Wild West to the Met steps in this Ralph Lauren gown. She paired the dress, accented by a va-va-voom slit, with silver heels, a fur shawl, and a black cowboy hat.
2019: “ Camp: Notes on Fashion”
J.Lo’s interpretation of “Camp” happened to be this fully fringed and beaded Versace look.
2018: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination”
The actress and singer fully embodied the 2018 theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination”, with this cross-adorned Balmain number.
2017: “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between”
We’re not quite sure how this dream-like Valentino gown fit into 2017’s avant-garde theme, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons”, but Lopez looked absolutely breathtaking.
2015: “China: Through The Looking Glass”
In 2015, the singer and actress looked ethereal in this sheer and beaded Versace gown.
2013: “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”
Let’s get loud! J.Lo put the “P” in “Punk” for the 2013 Met Gala in this cut-out printed Michael Kors gown that she topped off with an edgy bouffant hairdo.
2011: “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty”
In cut-out and floral-trimmed Gucci, the style star went all in on deep red in 2011 for the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” edition.
2010: “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity”
Lopez intepreted 2010’s “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” dress code through the lens of this hyper-feminine Zuhair Murad ball gown.
2008: “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy”
For the 2008 edition “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy,” Lopez went for a ladylike Alberta Ferretti number complete with ruching and an elegant skirt.
2007: “Poiret: King Of Fashion”
Lopez looked statuesque in metallic Marchesa for the 2007 “Poiret: King Of Fashion” bash.
2006: “AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion”
A decidedly simple moment in blush pink Dolce & Gabbana for the otherwise avant-garde dress code, “AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion.”
2004: “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion And Furniture In The 18th Century”
Here, with Dolce & Gabbana designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, Lopez sizzled for her Met Gala debut in a boudoir bombshell gown that she styled with a bold red lip and braided hair.
