April 2: Honolulu Police Department Uses Data and Trends to Fight Crime
Dozens of arrests have been made over the last few weeks in Honolulu, thanks to “hot spot,” the new strategy to combat crime, said Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan.
“Hot spot” mostly consists in focusing resources on high-crime areas previously determined by data and crime trends.
“(Officers) made 74 arrests and 193 charges in the regional patrol bureau. So that’s everything outside of central Honolulu and East Honolulu,” Logan said. “And then 70 arrests and 149 charges in the central patrol bureau.”
So far, HPD has managed to reduce illegal game-rooms by 40 percent. This is a milestone in crime control because these “attract” drug addicts, firearms use and prostitution, said the officer.
