Merida has consolidated its worldwide reputation as a tourist destination thanks to its culture and the diversity of its tourist attractions as it has been included in the list of the 24 best places to visit in 2024, according to CNN Travel.

This is the only Mexican city to be included in this group.

In the CNN Travel special “Where to Go in 2024”, the location is described as a fascinating city with Mayan and colonial heritage.

The Paseo de Montejo, which is full of art galleries and boutique hotels, is particularly highlighted. The strategic location near the coast and the Mayan archeological zones and cenotes are also highlighted.

Merida shares the list with destinations such as Angola, Sant John in Canada, South Korea, Albania, Chile, Macedonia in Greece, Panama, Morocco, Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, Greenland, Singapore and Galicia in Spain.

CNN Travel highlights not only the beauty of these destinations but also their suitability as off-peak travel options.

The US State Department highlights Yucatán as one of the safest places to visit, which contributes significantly to its appeal and leads to more and more domestic and foreign tourists coming to the city. 

The year 2022 marked a milestone in the reception of visitors to Yucatán. The year closed with 2,098,766 visitors. Added to this were the arrival of 99 ships with 252,000 passengers and the 838,000 who came to the city by bus, not counting those who arrived in private vehicles.

Forecasts indicate that this record could be surpassed in 2023, as according to the Tourism Promotion Secretariat (Sefotur), 2,177,562 people arrived by November last year, 81.1 percent of whom were locals.
