This holiday season, Blackpink announced several gifts for their fans. The Korean girl group released a trailer Dec. 20 for the virtual concert BLACKPINK: A VR Encore; Blackpink’s Jennie announced a company and label for the new year on Sunday; and now, Lisa has dropped a cover to Britney Spears‘ “My Only Wish (This Year)” on Christmas eve.
Although Blackpink’s main dancer and lead rapper, Lisa strips the music video of intricate dance routines. After receiving a single rose and a ribbon-wrapped note, she wanders through Paris picking up a pastry and admiring the Eiffel Tower while donning a banana yellow coat. At the video’s end, she turns to accept a rose from a mystery admirer.
“My Only Wish (This Year),” the only Christmas song by Spears, is the leadoff track in compilation album Platinum Christmas, which also featured TLC, the Backstreet Boys, and R. Kelly. (Rolling Stone ranked the Christmas jingle at 84 on our list of every song the “Oops!…I Did It Again” artist has released.)
Beyond the early-2000s Spears cover, Lisa will also be featured in BLACKPINK: A VR Encore. The virtual concert will allow fans to watch the final show of the Born Pink world tour in Seoul, South Korea, on Dec. 26 on Meta Horizon Worlds. The Meta partnership follows a 2023 global tour in support of the group’s 2022 album Born Pink. Prior to the eight-track album, their debut album, The Album, was released in 2020.
Jennie described her new project, Odd Atelier (OA), which the singer founded in November, as a “space that aims to create new things that attract attention in a different way from what is usual or expected,” in an Instagram post.
Members Rosé, Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa celebrated seven years together in August, sharing messages on social media. Lisa, who became part of the all-girl group after a YG Entertainment audition at age 14, told Rolling Stone for a May digital cover that they’ve joked about what will happen if Blackpink ends: She’ll return to Thailand, and Jisoo will head to Hawaii.
“But then I see the Spice Girls, how they got together for a reunion concert. Can we do that too someday?” Jennie said to Rolling Stone. “Will I be able to dance then, like I do now? I mean, won’t Blackpink last at least 10 more years? We’ll be nearly 40 by then.”
