Our Editors Share Their Most Wanted Gifts

It’s gift season and you’ve probably been stressing about the things you want to get for the people you love. That also means someone is likely stressing over you. So, have you thought about what you want? We asked our editors to share the gifts on their wish list they have been eyeing this year. So, if you don’t know what you want (or even if you do) let these picks serve as inspiration – making sure you get the gift you really want this year.

Brian Sacawa

Throughout the year, my style is generally very simple and classic. I’m not flashy. I’m not into super bold patterns. And I prefer to make a understated statement via the three F’s: fit, fabric, and of course, fragrance. However, during the holiday season there’s nothing I love more than wearing something festive. That could be a pair of tartan pants, a red plaid flannel robe, or something like this lovely holiday jacquard button-up from Polo RL from my wish list, which would make a nice addition to my post-Thanksgiving wardrobe. Only around the holidays will you see me sport something with snowflakes and moose and you know what? It sure feels right!

It’s for the same reasons I eschew a “style uniform” (the outfit-on-repeat approach made famous by the likes of Steve Jobs and Karl Lagerfeld) that I can’t bring myself to commit to a “signature scent”: the world is too full of incredible choices. So, this holiday season, I’m hoping I can add to my collection of colognes through a gift of Maison Margiela’s REPLICA By The Fireplace fragrance.

Scents have the uncanny ability to transport us to a different time and place and that’s the exact intent – and the beauty – behind Maison Margiela’s REPLICA line (which not only sets the scene through the scents’ charming names, but also creates a full narrative by adding a year and location to boot).

I already have two great editions from this collection – Jazz Club (Brooklyn, 2013) and At the Barber’s (Madrid, 1992) – and I’m stoked for By the Fireplace (Chamonix, 1971). The sample I tried truly smells like an old, charming ski chalet with its accompanying, ever-present lingering of a wood- burning fire. These aren’t inexpensive fragrances, but they’re sophisticated, complex, and long-lasting making them a great investment – and in this case, gift – in my book.

Despite resisting for years, I’ve gotten bitten by the watch bug and had the opportunity to purchase a few nice pieces. Conveniently, my old watch winder went kaput recently, so a new one would be a wonderful, practical gift.

If I’ve been very good, one from Wolf find its way under the tree. But, I’d be more than happy with Chiyoda as well. Mostly, though, as we just welcomed a newborn, I’d really like some peace and quiet for Christmas.

John-Paul Stuthridge

This year is the first time I have bookmarked a folder called ‘Wishlist’, and the first item on there is this Cream Solid Cashmere Scarf from Cordings. The idea of winter white, Christmas, and cashmere scream festive luxury in the most subtle way for me, hence why I’d be beside myself with joy if the big man thinks I’m nice enough for it.

The older I get, the more I appreciate experiences as gifts. What I would like as a gift more than anything else this Christmas season is a night out with my beautiful wife suited and booted at our favorite local restaurant. In years past, this has been a frequent event that we treat as a sacred ritual. Careful consideration is always given to the soundtrack of the evening, attire, menu items, and conversation. Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra accompany our journey through evenings.

This past year has been busy. Life gets in the way. All of a sudden, our ritual is sidelined to clear the way for things that make us too tired to get out and about. The holidays, as wonderful as they are, seem to throw in an extra layer of chaos. I can’t think of a better gift than an evening revisiting our ritual at our favorite speakeasy in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. The recipe? A solid base of Frank Sinatra’s Christmas album. Equal parts formal wear. A generous helping of Old-Fashioned cocktails. All of this on a Christmas vacation day-off. Oh, and a dash of snow if I may be so greedy.

I always love clothing and shoes as gifts, particularly if it’s something I’ve been eyeing for a while but haven’t been able to pull the trigger on. This year, I’ve been really eyeing these suede Paraboot Michael boots. I’m a sucker for suede shoes and these are awesome, but they’re also very specific so I’ve resisted buying them for myself. The perfect gift!
