Nintendo Switch 2 demos were reportedly shown off to developers at the recent Gamescom event held in Cologne, Germany in August. That’s according to Eurogamer in a recent report.

No specific details about the unit’s hardware specs are mentioned. But one can speculate based on the details that were shared with regards to the demos themselves. Eurogamer says these were tech demos. So you can think of these as a proof of concept to show what the system is capable of. In fact that’s the whole reason for a tech demo. To show off the capabilities of the product.

Nintendo is said to have shown these demos to developers behind closed doors during the conference. All while attendees were buzzing around the show floor unaware of what was transpiring in a secret room with Nintendo somewhere off in the distance.

One of the Switch 2 demos was an enhanced version of Breath of the Wild

It’s worth remembering that this was a tech demo and not a demo of an upcoming re-release. But it seems Nintendo thought the best way to show off the Switch 2’s capabilities based on the new hardware, was to showcase how well it runs an enhanced version of Breath of the Wild. A game released for the original Nintendo Switch at the console’s launch.

Not much additional information is available on how the game looked or what resolution things were being displayed at. Just that it was a “souped up version” of the game. A common complaint from some about the Switch, despite its many successes and many hours of provided enjoyment to most or all who own one, is that performance could use some improvement. Not just with frame rates but with visuals. One thing many fans are hoping for is a more powerful version of the Switch console that can run games at higher resolution with better frame rates.

And it seems possible that this is what these tech demos were designed to showcase to developers. Nintendo is suspected to release the next version of the Switch sometime in 2024. Specifically sometime in the back half of the year.
