The popular video-sharing app TikTok is in hot water right now as it risks being banned in the United States. However, its parent company might have another trick up its sleeve- by that, we mean another app. ByteDance might introduce Lemon8 to the US market to replace TikTok.
The current drama was TikTok is ongoing. The US government fears that having TikTok available in the United States poses a massive security risk. It does not like the fact that so many American people are giving their data to a Chinese-owned company. This is why the app may eventually be banned in the United States.
ByteDance could release Lemon8 in the US to replace TikTok
So, what is the company to do? Well, according to CNBC, it appears that ByteDance might introduce another app to the United States. It’s an app called Lemon8, and it might attempt to fill the gap left by TikTok. While Lemon8 is not new, most people in the States are unfamiliar with it. ByteDance introduced Lemon8 to the Japanese Market back in 2020.
Now, Lemon8 is not a video-sharing app; rather, it’s not as video-heavy as TikTok is. As CNBC describes it, it’s like a mixture of Instagram and Pinterest. So, it’s a social media platform with an emphasis on sharing picture content. Also, it seems like it’s better at sharing text-based content as well.
There’s no doubt that TikTok being banned in the US will mean a dip in ByteDance’s revenue. Lemon8 might be the thing to help fill the hole. In fact, Lemon8 is the second most downloaded lifestyle app in the US over the past 30 days. It’s second only to Pinterest, and that is saying a lot. The app has 17 million downloads, and we expect that number to skyrocket once ByteDance starts heavily pushing the app in the states.
With the fear of Tiktok being banished looming over American Tiktok users, we expect them to flock toward the app en masse. However, those who are making a living pumping out TikTok videos might not get the same revenue stream from Lemon8. We will have to see how this plays out for ByteDance. Also, we will have to see if the US bands this app as well
