The week’s mantra is, “Don’t change your style to fit the fads. Change the fashion to align with you.” Simply put, authenticity has been the theme for Nigerian style girls this season. Staying true to self, the stars opted for simplicity beyond the ordinary. The dresses were lekker, flaunting gratifying shades and pleasing details that evoked femme vibes. From girly coordinates to pompous riots of colors, the streets of Lagos were set ablaze with fashion that was determined to stand out.

The fabrics were luxurious, with silky finishes and thoughtful adornments that served like a veteran would his/her nation. Listening to the volatility of trends, especially with the Nigerian stars who prefer individualism, could be a tad tasking. The solution remains to define your style and lean towards your best bet. Why? Because being spoiled for choice is a habit in these Lagos fashion streets.

Sometimes to make an outfit stand out requires tiny details, such as the texture choice and preferred decorations. Nimi Nwofor chose silk and fringe, pumped up with a bold rosette adornment. She opted for a blue Patrick Cavanni ensemble featuring a rose-detailed top tucked into high-waisted pants with fringe details on both sides. Nwofor completed the look with a powder blue Lady Dior bag, silver pumps, and sparkling jewelry that were just her. Whatever the choice, always add your spin because regular is boring.

DJ, play: “I’ve got sunshine…”. Dazzling in a yellow sundress is all the mood-boosting prescription your closet requires on low days. To premiere her new show, “Spa with Osas,” Osas Ighodaro was pretty delightful in a spaghetti-strap Mulawwan dress. Featuring a corset top and flare skirt, the outfit was absolutely girly, and her gold strappy heels and chunky jewelry were a shiny addition to the offering. This rendering gave the gold and yellow color combo a mature twist.

#3. DJ Cuppy

Every now and then, we rebrand and reintroduce ourselves to a world that thinks it has figured us out, just because there’s much to know about ourselves and nothing is set in stone. This must be the case of DJ Cuppy, entertainer and daughter of Nigerian business mogul Femi Otedola. Having a high affinity for pink, the star recently gave up her over-the-top Barbie ways for a more relaxed and conservative style. She was a sight in an off-white oversized suit paired with statement earrings. No doubt, the proportions understood the assignment. Her slicked-back hair was laid to precision and the platform shoes offered a teeny boho chic vibe to the boss-babe undertaking.

#4. Omowunmi Dada

Some fashionistas claim high slits have lost their wow factor due to their ubiquitous state. But Omowunmi Dada said, “Watch me” in a modish Banke Kuku printed dress. The long sleeve frock featured a waistline knotted and draped to emphasize the leg-baring slit. Rocking a lightweight dress has its advantages, one being ease of movement. In addition to the beautiful features were interesting prints and a two-toned color effect. The dress held its own in a way that it didn’t depend on accessories for vamp up, so she employed the services of a mini clutch and PVC mules.

Although we’ve seen color-blocking take a subtle path from bold contrasts to softer shade mergers, the maximalist fashion girlies remain enthusiastic about the traditional color juxtaposes. Nigerian designer Mimi Yina, aka MedlinBoss, gave a nod to bold color-blocking in an orange-and-lime-green combo that made a solid statement. The look featured an orange corset top layered on a silk lime green button-down shirt, finished off with orange wide-leg pants. While the color was bold and party-friendly, the ensemble itself was a corporate delight.

Serving Nollywood-baddie glam with shoulder-length full waves is the only right choice for a corseted slip coordination for Lilian Afegbai. Without sleeves, the hair hijacked the spotlight effortlessly. But the outfit’s illusion prints and easy on-the-eye silhouette was still a win. This was a simple offering with an elaborate effect. Afegbai kept it understated with black pumps and a mini structured bag.
