While I love taking the time to select a creative look for the office, nothing beats the ease of simply throwing on a dress and heading out the door. I’m someone who doesn’t wear dresses regularly, but when it comes to work, they’re the first thing I gravitate towards when I’m in a rush. They’re a one-and-done solution that can easily be slipped on and keep you looking both stylish and polished. Whether you’re interviewing for a new job, have an important client meeting, or are powering through emails at your desk, a chic dress is key to perfecting your office wardrobe.

Working in fashion, our offices tend to lean more lenient in the style department, but the ones I’ve listed below will work for any dress code, flexible or formal. Poplin shirt-dresses may work for a more casual environment, but a wrap-style silhouette or a crisp sheath dress will be right for a more buttoned-up look. And if you’re starting in an office for the first time, I’ve also included important factors to consider when shopping. Keep scrolling to get a head start because when you’re confident with what you wear to work, you are that much ready to get things done.

What to Look For In A Work Dress:

Fabrics: It’s always important to take note of fabric content for comfortability, but since work will occupy most of your day, it’s especially crucial. I would pick breathable fabrics that keep their shape till the end of the day. If you are choosing a fabric that wrinkles easily, such as linen or silk, opt for a silhouette that’s more structured and likely to keep its shape, like a shirtdress.

Length: Depending on your office’s specific dress code, the right length of a work dress can vary. If you’re unsure, I’d recommend sticking to midi and maxi lengths to play it safe. I don’t think minidresses are completely out of the picture, but styling matters. When styling a mini, a blazer or a flat shoe can keep things looking more streamlined and professional.

Silhouette: Below, I’ve listed the key silhouettes to consider when building your work wardrobe. Shirt dresses, knit dresses, wrap dresses, and sheath dresses. While these are considered traditional work styles, you can still make them feel more updated by looking for details like pleating or adding accessories like belts and jewelry.
