In order to have more trained “elite” police officers that focus not only on response but also on prevention, the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic of Benito Juárez, the City Council, and international agencies have conducted courses for 243 officers in 2023.
Alma Reynoso Zambrano, Cancún City Councilor for Security, is pleased that the city will have better-prepared police officers thanks to the courses provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Program for the Prevention and Reduction of Violence (PREVI).
“This year we have already trained 243 police officers and will soon send another group of about 123. As a result, we will have more prepared police officers thanks to the coordination and collaboration with USAID.” “But it will not stop here,” she said.
Reynoso recalled that all this is aimed at achieving prevention. Now it is not so much about retention or response, which is important, but rather fighting to achieve prevention.
Regarding the courses, she explained that some were held at the Municipal Police Academy and others at the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic facilities
“This will change in the next courses because, with the academy certification, everyone will take the courses at the police academy, we need to strengthen everyone who is in the secretariat,” she acknowledged.
She stressed that so far there have been two trainings in 2023, the first group consisted of 120 and the second of 123 officers. “Before sending them to the courses, you have to do strategic planning so as not to neglect the city and train them at the same time,” she added.
