Whether you want to take advantage of the good weather and go camping, or enjoy some me time at the beach, this list is packed with some epic destinations to visit in the U.S. in August 2024.
Mackinac Island, Michigan
Looking for a quiet seaside retreat to relax & recharge? Between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, you will find a hidden gem called Mackinac Island.
The streets are car-free, which is one of the reasons why this place is so laid back. The island is relatively small and you can explore it on bike, horse-drawn carriage, and even on foot. You can also take a scenic boat tour.
For adventure seekers, there is Mackinac Island State Park, where you can bike, kayak, observe local nature and wildlife, or savor mesmerizing views from Arch Rock.
Boulder, Colorado
Can’t decide between time spent in nature versus festivals and open-air summer concerts? Have both in Boulder, as it provides the perfect blend of outdoor fun and cultural experiences.
In August, it hosts plenty of events, including the Boulder International Fringe Festival, Bands on the Bricks, and Boulder Craft Beer Fest.
Surrounded by stunning mountains, there are excellent hiking trails right in Boulder’s backyard. Newbies can try an easier hike at Enchanted Mesa or the Flatirons. For a bit of a challenge, head to Royal Arch.
Glacier National Park, Montana
Summers are relatively short in Glacier National Park, so take the opportunity and enjoy this fantastic wilderness opportunity this August. The day temperatures usually hover around 70s, which makes the park ideal for hiking, rafting, camping, kayaking, and mountain biking.
Note that August is the peak season at Glacier National Park, at other times of the year, many trails and businesses are closed. We recommend you book your accommodation, including camping sites, well in advance.
Kiawah Island, South Carolina
The U.S. coastline can get extremely busy in summer and finding a destination for a relaxing beach vacation can become a real scavenger hunt. Lucky for you, we know of places which are less crowded than others. One of them is Kiawah Island in South Carolina.
This low-key island just off Charleston is home to some of the most untouched beaches, pristine maritime forests, sand dunes, and abundant wildlife. Bask in the sun and soak in the calming atmosphere or see what there is to offer on a paddleboard or a kayak. There is a high chance you will come across dolphins and turtles.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Are you in search of the summer adventure of your lifetime? Acadia National Park boasts 47,000 acres of wild forests, rough coastal scenery, and granite peaks with breathtaking vistas. And while August is the peak month, the trails are relatively spaced out, so you will most likely not be bothered by crowds.
Indulge yourself with scenic drives, hike the iconic trails, such as the Beehive Trail or Gorham Mountain Trail, or get your heart pumping when rock climbing. If you can, bring a small basket on your hikes. August is the blueberry season in Maine, so you can harvest a few on the way.
Seattle, Washington
Do you prefer city escapes but are afraid it’s too hot for them in August? If you want to avoid the boiling concrete, we recommend you visit Seattle. It offers mild weather and very little precipitation and is therefore ideal for urban activities as well as hiking in the surrounding mountains.
Visit Seattle’s museums, have a picnic in a park, or please your taste buds in one of the renowned cafés and restaurants. Nature lovers can either go for the mountains or explore its waters on a cruise, kayak, or whale-watching tour.
Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada
For an idyllic summer break by a lake, set off camping at Lake Tahoe. This stunning alpine lake is located on the border of California and Nevada and provides a range of activities in a beautiful natural setting.
Its crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, sailing, and fishing. Or you can just laze around at one of its beaches, such as Kings Beach or Zephyr Cove. Theatre enthusiasts will appreciate the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival which offers spectacular outdoor performances at Sand Harbor. There are also some hiking and biking opportunities around, including Tahoe Rim Trail and Emerald Bay State Park.
Providence, Rhode Island
Are you set in the Big Apple and looking for an inspiring escape close to your home? Providence is a charming town in Rhode Island known for hip neighborhoods, top-notch dining opportunities, and a vibrant art scene. And its streets are most lively in August.
Check out the impressive collection of the RISD Museum featuring Picasso and Monet, take a walk in Roger Williams Park, or sip on tasty cocktails by the river. August is also the month of the Rhode Island International Film Festival which showcases independent films from around the world.
Orlando, Florida
Kids are still out of school in August, so why not enjoy some family activities in Orlando? Despite the hot weather, it has its perks. Theme parks generally see fewer crowds than in June and July, which means less waiting for the rides. If your kids love Halloween, they can kick off the season at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.
And there is no shortage of places to cool down. You can do so at Disney World’s Water Parks or head for a day trip to nearby beaches, such as Cocoa Beach, Daytona, or New Smyrna Beach. They’re all only about an hour’s drive.
Big Island, Hawaii
This list wouldn’t be complete without at least one Hawaiian island. The reason why we recommend visiting Big Island – a paradise for hikers and snorkelers – in August better than any other time is that it’s one of the driest months there.
You can look forward to balmy temperatures and a very little chance of hurricanes. Thanks to the clear skies, it’s also a fantastic season for stargazing. Stay in a remote camping site instead of a resort for one night. It’s totally worth it.
